1. Objectives
 |
To preserve and enhance nuclear knowledge for RCA Member States |

To develop and train the core research resources from R&D institutions, universities, etc. in nuclear energy and quantum engineering |

2. Overview
|
The RCA/KAIST Master’s Degree Course is intended to educate and train students with a leadership caliber from the RCA Member States with the aim to develop them into elite leaders in nuclear energy and quantum engineering in their countries, working in universities, government supported R&D institutions, or government funded enterprises, etc.
This course is ultimately to promote international cooperation and coordination in the nuclear arena among RCA Member States. Principally, it is planned to select 1 to 2 persons from each Member State.
This course has been implemented since March 2003 and 15 students in total from 6 countries have been accepted up to now.
For graduation, students must accomplish at least 36 credit units consisting of 8 courses (24 units) and a thesis research (12 units), which normally takes 2 years. In KAIST, an academic year normally consists of 2 semesters (Spring semester; 1st March to 20th June, Fall semester; 1st September to 20th December) and the maximum credits per semester that students can take is 15 units. |

3. Institution & Department Awarding the Master’s Degree

 Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST)
- Ranked 1st place among the science and technology academic institutions in all of Asia
(including Australia) for two successive years in 1999 and 2000 according to Asiaweek.

4. Financial Support (RCA programme scholarship)
|
Course application fee (USD 60): to be covered by the programme.
Tuition (5,688,000 Won = Approx. USD 5,580 for one academic year): to be covered by the programme.
Living expenses (600,000 Korean Won/month = approx. USD 590/month = USD 7,080/year):
to be paid at the end of each month for two years.
An economy-class one-way air fare from the nearest airport of the originating country to
Incheon, Korea): to be reimbursed by the programme after arrival.
 NOTE
|
- On-campus housing can be arranged but the cost must be borne individually. A shared room at KAIST currently costs about 390,000 Korean Won/semester (=6 months), approximately USD 384 /semester..
- The meals in the Campus cafeteria cost around 2500 ~ 3000 Korean Won per meal (2.5 ~ 3.0 USD/meal).
- KAIST does not provide housing for married MS students’ family and the married students, who want to bring his/her family, must bear in mind that the rental apartment near KAIST is quite expensive.
- Medical insurance and student medi-care fees: approximately 220,000 Korean Won/semester (6 months), approx USD 200/semester (6 months), also to be borne individually.
- Student should convey the air fare cost to the Course Coordinator by e-mail before paying for it for permission. Also students must submit the air plane ticket and its payment receipt issued by the travel company after arrival in KAIST. The air fare for the departure after finishing the course is not covered by the programme. |

5. Qualifications for Application and Admission
|
Applicants must:
- have graduated from a 4-year academic institution or equivalent by the time they are enrolled
in the course (Bachelor of Arts degree)
- be recommended by the National RCA Representative of his/her country
- meet the KAIST admissions criteria
- have an English test score higher than one of the following criteria except for those
applicants from the recognized English speaking countries.
TOEFL PBT 520,
TOEFL CBT 190,
TOEIC 640, or
TEPS 541
(For the applicants in the year 2006 only. It will be increased continuously.)

6. How to Apply
|
The National RCA Representatives are requested to send the names and organization/institution
of the recommended applicants to RCARO.
Applicants should send their application package directly to the following address

The following items must accompany each application.
1. KAIST International Graduate Application Form
2. Statement of Purpose
3. Statement of Financial Resources
4. Two Letters of Recommendation (1 copy from each) from the educational
institute attended
5. Academic transcripts & graduation certificates from all the colleges attended
6. TOEFL score record (for students from non-English speaking countries)- The test taken more
than 2 years prior to application for admission will not be considered..
7. Optional: Any material demonstrating applicant's scholastic ability
NOTE
|
- All documents stated above must be official and original. The offer of admission may be revoked if a candidate's submitted documents are found to be false and counterfeit. Also faxes and photocopies are not considered as valid application documents. However photocopies of a transcript with a recently notarized stamp are considered as original.
- All documents should be in English and if the application documents including academic transcript are in a language other than English, they should be translated into English with the authorization of a public notary in your country.
- Submission of English test score is exempt for applicants from RCA Member States where the official language is considered as English by KAIST; Australia, India, New Zealand, the Philippines, and Singapore.
- All applicants from the other RCA Member States such as Bangladeshi, China, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam, must submit the official test score of TOEFL(PBT or CBT), TOEIC, TEPS or etc.

- In the form of Statement of Financial Resources, use ‘RCA Programme Scholarship’ as a sponsoring organization. The amounts for the tuition and fee = US$ 5,580/year and the living expense = US$ 7,080/year for 2 years.
- We shall only accept your application documents that arrive at KAIST by the deadline. We do not take any responsibility for a failure in delivery of application documents by the deadline.

7. Implementation Schedule
|
August 2005
- Announcement of the course to all RCA Member States (National Representatives) by
the RCA Regional Office.
- Applicants to the course must be recommended by National RCA Representative of each
Member State. (The National RCA Representatives are requested to send the names and
organization/institution of the applicants to RCA Regional Office in Korea at
[email protected] or [email protected] or by fax to 82-42-864-1626)

20 October 2005
- All documents must be received by the Course Coordinator by this date.
- Course Coordinator reviews the documents and submits them to the administration team
of KAIST if they are complete.
December 2005
- Applications will be evaluated by the Student Selection Committee of KAIST.
- Administration team of KAIST will notify the admission results to the applicants and the
Course Coordinator by mid-December.
- The Course Coordinator and the Course Assistant will contact the accepted applicants
for further instruction by e-mail.
- Students should prepare a Visa and a round-trip air-line ticket. (Arrival date : 24~28 February,
Leaving date: open)
24~28 February 2006
- Campus dormitories (2 students share a room) will be allocated to the accepted applicants before
their arrival.
- Accepted students will arrive at KAIST, Daejeon, Korea and settle in at the dormitory with a guided
tour by the Course Assistant.
◇ Students are advised to bring 3 passport-size photographs in order to have photo ID and
other necessary official documents made without delay.
◇ Students also must submit the receipts of the air fare and the local transportation inside
Korea from Incheon airport to KAIST for reimbursement.
◇ Students are advised to bring warm clothes for winter season, November to February in Korea.
